July is here and so is the heat. The East Coast of the US is experiencing a heatwave currently, and the rest of the week promises to be 90+ degrees. As you enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors, please remember the following:
1) Wear Sunscreen and/or Sunblock – Protect yourself and your family from the harmful effects of excessive sun exposure. Look for sunscreens and sunblock creams that protect against UVA and UVB rays. Aim for products with SPF 15 and higher, and be especially mindful when choosing products for children.
2) Add Sun-Protective Clothing and Accessories – Along with sunscreens and sunblocks, add sun-protective clothing, suitable shades and broad-brim hats when outside. You can read more about this topic by clicking on the Skin Cancer Foundation‘s web page on the subject.
3) Seek Shade Where Possible – Even if you may be drenched in sunscreen and fully clothed in protective clothing, still seek shaded areas wherever possible.
4) Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate – Our bodies all lose a lot more water than we think! In hot temperatures, purposely walk with lots of pure water for the whole family. If you have a big family, or are on a trip with a large group, designate one or two “water leaders” that will make sure everyone is drinking enough water.
Enjoy your summertime outside, but with many things, take precaution when the temperatures are especially brutal, and check on neighbors and friends often.
