Every day we have decisions to make, and these take a lot of time and energy. It turns out the more decisions you have to make, the more exhausting it can be, and not surprising, there is a term for it.
According to The American Medical Association (AMA), decision fatigue is “a state of mental overload that can impede a person’s ability to continue making decisions” [1]. Although this definition is taken from a medical website, it applies to anyone (not just patients).
You have probably experienced decision fatigue before: you may have serious decisions to make concerning your health or your family, but as more decisions present themselves, mental exhaustion makes it more difficult to make further sound decisions. Here are some ways to deal with decision fatigue:
(1) Plan Ahead – For situations you can control, plan ahead. It may be grocery shopping, picking out outfits ahead of time, budgeting or saving; planning ahead when there are not time constraints will help with future decision-making.
(2) Don’t Neglect Sleep and Rest – As busy as we all are, we should not neglect rest and sleep. These help the body and mind reset and think clearer.
(3) Spend Time With God – Besides the stress of decision-making, there is added stress when you don’t know what decision to make. Spend time in study, reflection and devotion to hear God’s voice and to move by His leading.
(4) Eat a Healthy Balanced Diet – What we consume directly affects our mind. If you want to have a clear mind when making important decisions, be sure that your eating a healthy and balanced diet rich in plant based and minimally processed foods.
(5) Get Help and Support – Decision-making goes a lot smoother if you have the support and help of others. Involve your family and friends in the decisions you have to make. If you don’t have any, research and join support groups in your community.
