It is easy to be discontent with where you are in life and what you lack. We love to complain and compare ourselves and our accomplishments with others and that can cause more disappointment at times. When we are tempted to murmur, we should remember to count the blessings we have and stop focusing on what we don’t have.
What is a blessing? What does the word mean? When we look into the bible, the first mention of the word is found in Gen 12:2. The Lord God spoke to Abram and told him that He will make a great nation from him, and his name will be great. The Hebrew word used here is berâkâh which is defined as a gift, praise of God and prosperity. In the New Testament, the first mention of the word is found in Luke 24:53. Jesus spoke to and blessed his disciples before He left them, and they went into the temple continually, praising and blessing God. The Greek word used here is eulogeō which means to praise or celebrate. In both Testaments, the root word for blessing is bless: in the Old it is bârak (to bless or to kneel) and in the New it is makarios (happy), eulogeō (already mentioned above) and eulogia (praise, fair speech).
Looking at these definitions, we can see how someone can both be a blessing and have blessings. Are you a blessing? And do you have blessings? What are they? Have you considered all that you have? Spend some time each day thanking God for the gifts He has given you and use these to ‘bless’ others.
